Sally has a passion for the youth. Her achievements started years ago in her Nursing career where she cared for
people of all ages, but was particularly touched by the young she looked after. Born in Victoria, in 1985
Sally moved to Tasmania with her husband and young family of three sons, all under the age of four, to enjoy
the life style Tasmania had to offer.
After a serious illness, Sally made a promise to herself to do all the things she loved and had put on hold for
some years. She went back to swimming and then started cycling as she had always loved riding her bike when
she was young. In 2002 after much training and racing with the Northern Vets cycling club her fitness
improved.
She had success racing on the road and the track on a National and World Masters level. Sally wanted to take
this success a step further and do something for the community. Accepting a challenge from John McKenna,
Dealer Principal Launceston Mitsubishi, the ride project was created and Sally commenced her 1st solo ride
around Tasmania in 2002. Since then the project has grown with amazing support from the Tasmanian community,
businesses, Rotary Clubs, community groups, city councils, corporate sponsors and schools.
Community involvement is a part of Sally Fletcher's daily life. Sally has single-handedly implemented
"Sally's Ride", an initiative to assist in the prevention of youth suicide in Tasmania, to increase
awareness of the issue and to promote life and health.
Sally has embraced the participation of young people in her project, with the involvement of school children
throughout Tasmania, College students, Interact school based clubs, Rotaract youth clubs. Training is
difficult at times-to stay motivated when training alone, to have to get up early and get on the bike before
work, to stay safe when on the road, to maintain a certain level of fitness during winter months and to keep
focused are all in the daily routine. Sally has been told by a young person that she has made a difference to
them. Nothing else matters.
