Forestry Tas issues challenge
Forestry Tasmania riding for Sally
THE inclusion of Olympic gold medal cyclist Michael Grenda will help Forestry Tasmania field a strong team in this year’s Sally’s Ride Tamar Valley Cycle Challenge on November 15,
Managing director Bob Gordon, who will also be a part of the team, has laid down a challenge to other companies throughout Tasmania to enter the event.
Participants will have a choice of four rides with distances ranging from 25km, 45km, 95km and 140km ride.
“We have a strong team, are out there to win and are pretty confident of succeeding,” Mr Gordon said.
“But I encourage other companies throughout Tasmania to take us on for the honour of winning the Forestry Tasmania Community Assist Corporate Challenge Shield.
“This year our team of 30 riders will include those two wags from Going Bush Andrew Hart and Nick Duigan and FT staff who should help our effort, but our chances will really be boosted with the addition of Olympic gold medal cyclist Michael Grenda.
“I wouldn’t say I was the fittest person in the team but I’m not afraid to give it a go and nor should others.”
Corporate teams can be made up of any number of four or more riders. Team members can participate in any of the rides and the cumulative number of kilometres will be tallied. The team with the most overall kilometres will win the shield.
The Forestry Tasmania team will ride in the 95 kilometre Forestry Tasmania Community Assist ride which will leave Park St at 9.30am and head along the West Tamar Hwy, across the Batman Bridge and back to Park St via Bangor and Turners Marsh.
Not only is the Forestry Tasmania team out to beat other corporate entries but there will also be some friendly rivalry within the team itself according to Nick Duigan.
“I have been training for this ride for some time but I can’t say the same for Harty,” he said.
“He could be in for a rude shock – I’m not sure his Malvern Star has seen too much bitumen of late.
“But we are both looking forward to the challenge and encourage others to give it a try for a very worthy cause.”
Sally’s Ride Tamar Valley Cycle Challenge will raise funds for local organisations working with Tasmanians with mental health issues.
The ride is sponsored through the Forestry Tasmania/Southern Cross Community Assist program.
